Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. SM Athermal Laser Machining

Norman Noble, Inc. continues to lead through innovation with Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. (System To Enable Ablation Laser Technology Haz-free). Our athermal laser machining process was developed to create highly precise features in any material, including bioabsorbable polymers, shape memory metals and other exotic alloys, without producing any heat affected zone (HAZ).

Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. is an ultrashort pulse (USP) laser that does not generate any heat-affected zone (HAZ). It can reduce—and in some cases eliminate—costly deburring and post-processing steps, increasing both product quality and yield.

Capabilities: We integrate and develop our own proprietary laser machining technologies, which enables us to provide the most efficient manufacturing processes required to help our customers bring innovative products to market.

The Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H process supports the technically advancing manufacturing requirements for customers in the medical and aerospace industries.

The Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. produces the narrowest lasercut kerfs in the industry. With a kerf width of .00045” in NiTinol and .00025” in bioabsorbable materials, Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. provides product design teams with a capability never before achievable on a production-ready platform. The narrow kerf capability combined with accelerated processing speed, makes Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H the solution to any processing need.

  • Heat-free machining of bioabsorbable materials and Nitinol.
  • Does not produce heat affected zones (HAZ).
  • Reduces or eliminates costly deburring and post-processing steps.
  • Fastest Laser Ablation Processing Speed.
  • Our athermal laser machining process increases product quality and yield.

The ultrafast laser process enables the machining of features in materials used to manufacture vascular stents with minimal variability and without the introduction of heat inherent in traditional thermal laser manufacturing. Noble S.T.E.A.L.T.H. represents a dramatic advancement in the manufacturing of stents as well as other medical device applications including drug delivery systems, catheter devices, valve components and needles.

Prototype Manufacturing

Norman Noble’s prototype machining capabilities for athermal laser machining are provided using dedicated equipment in our independent process development centers (PDCs). This enables us to isolate our process development activities from production manufacturing areas. Our experienced team of engineers work within our PDCs to develop and validate the most efficient manufacturing methods required to machine your medtech product innovations to exact drawing specifications.

Norman Noble’s expertise in athermal laser machining is an evolution of decades of hands-on experience. We are dedicated to improving our laser manufacturing capabilities through the design of innovative, proprietary machining systems & processes. We are constantly striving to find new and better ways to manufacture our customers’ products, products that depend on ultra-precision micromachining. Working closely with our customers we are able to develop the most efficient custom tooling and parameters to manufacture their products.

Our process development team works with our customers to manufacture very early design stage prototypes, and our technologies often enable the commercialization of next-generation medtech products. Our PDCs also works closely with our quality & process validation department and production staff to ensure a smooth transition from prototype to production.

Process Validation for Athermal Laser Machining
Process validation for athermal laser machining begins at Norman Noble, Inc. (NNI) with a clear understanding of our customers' needs together with ISO standards, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) and the NNI Quality Policy.

For information on Validation, please review our white paper of FDA Compliant Validation of Medtech Implants and Devices.

Design For Manufacturability
Medical device OEM’s that have applied Norman Noble Inc.’s design for manufacturability services have realized substantial benefits. Costs and time-to-market are often cut in half with significant improvements in quality and delivery. These services are most effective when applied to projects that involve tight tolerances and exotic materials, including NiTinol.
